Sugaring vs Waxing?

Waxing removes hair from the follicle in the opposite direction of growth, and can cause follicle scarring. Waxing usually results in the painful ingrown hair bumps.

Wax has resins, additives, and other compounds that can irritate the skin. Furthermore, wax is applied hot, and it might result in severe burns or ripping of sensitive skin.

Sugar paste, on the other hand, is prepared from a paste made of just of sugar, water, and lemon juice. It won't attach to skin because there aren't any resins, but it will stick to the hair!

It's only applied at body temperature and removed in the direction of hair growth. With sugaring, there is no risk of burns or tears.

In summary, there are three main differences between sugaring and waxing:

  • Because sugar paste isn't heated, there's no chance of burning (and your skin won't be as red as it would be if you got waxed!)
  • Sugar paste adheres to hair and dead skin cells but not live skin cells, resulting in reduced irritation. Unlike waxing, there's no risk of losing a layer of skin!
  • Sugaring is a method of hair removal that eliminates hair in its natural growth direction. Waxing removes hair against the growth of the follicle, which is more painful for the skin.
